Mapping Cases and Building Safety Plans, San Diego

This practical two-day workshop will focus on the two central aspects of the Signs of Safety approach to equip practitioners to immediately begin using this approach.
Day one will focus on using the Signs of Safety assessment and planning framework that enables professionals and family members to think themselves into and through the situation so they can work together in building safety for the children. Andrew will describe the elements of the framework, the practice and questioning skills that bring it to life, present a number of Signs of Safety assessments, undertake a live demonstration and get participants practicing the skills.
The whole purpose of the Signs of Safety approach is to as quickly as possible, build in-the-family, everyday safety for children that addresses the maltreatment dangers or worries. On the second day of this workshop we will explore the specifics of family-owned and enacted safety plans (a list of services that parents must attend is not a safety plan!) and how to create such safety plans together with families. Numerous examples will be presented and participants will again have lots of opportunity to practice the safety-planning skills.
All participants will receive an electronic copy of Andrew’s latest paper describing the history, the approach, world-wide use, practice examples and implementation issues of the Signs of Safety as background reading for the workshop. Web-based workshop handouts will also be available to all participants.
The Department for Child Protection in West Australia has chosen November 12, 13 and 14, 2012 for its second Signs of Safety Gathering. All 17 districts from around the state will present as well as three international presentations. This Gathering will provide an end-to-end picture of a comprehensive system-wide Signs of Safety implementation. Participants from overseas and elsewhere in Australia are welcome though places will be limited.
