Two recent English reviews of practice (Gardner, 2008 and DSCF, 2009) have identified the problem that the ‘recent emphasis on strengths based approaches and the positive aspects of families (for example in the Common Assessment Framework) arguably discourages workers from making professional judgments about deficits in parents’ behaviour which might be endangering their children’ (DSCF 2009, p.47). Both reviews suggest the Signs of Safety approach is the one approach they are aware of that incorporates a strengths base alongside an exploration of danger and risk.

Signs of Safety in Edinburgh

The City of Edinburgh Council, Children & Families Department, Scotland have undertaken a process of training many of their staff in the Signs of Safety approach, including sending a number of staff to advanced five day training with Andrew and Viv Hogg in Gateshead in October 09. Although the organisation is not currently in a position to undertake a full implementation it is encouraging its staff to use the ideas and tools where ever possible.

Is it possible to integrate Signs of Safety and the US Structured Decision Making risk assessment tool? In April 2010 a dialogue exploring that question was organised and video recorded.
