Informing and Involving Children in Child Abuse Cases
Children and young people who are caught up in the child protection system often tell us that they don't understand why statutory professionals intervened in their lives and in their family. These youngsters also tell us that they commonly feel they have very little say in the decisions that are taken about their lives.
The Words and Pictures approach to working with children provides a concrete, tried-and-tested method for professionals to provide these children and young people with age-appropriate, clear information about the actual or alleged maltreatment that has occurred in their family.The Words and Pictures document then becomes a historical document that the children and their carers can draw upon in the future, and offers a clear foundation to involve the young people in planning for their lives, whether they live with their family or separate from them.
In this DVD, Andrew Turnell:
- Describes how to involve all of the key adults in the young person's life, both family and professional, in preparing the Words and Pictures explanation.
- Describes how to present the information to the children and involve them in creating the Words and Pictures document.
- Presents Words and Pictures examples in situations of sexual abuse, an injured infant and neglect.
Purchasing the Product
The DVD can be purchased in four ways: Single User Copy, Single User Trainer License, Organisational Multi-user License or University/College Multi-user License as below. Full license details can be found here.

Pricing
Single User Copy:
- $50 (Australian dollars - AUD)
Single User Trainer License*:
- $100 (AUD) for individual trainers using the DVD in public training
Includes a Personal Training License providing permission for an individual to use the DVD in public training they run.
Organisational/Multi-user*:
- $160 (AUD) for small organisations of up to 50 staff.
This package includes 2 DVDs and an Organisational Multi-use License. - $300 (AUD) For medium organisations with between 50 to 250 staff
This package includes 4 DVDs and an Organisational Multi-use License - $600 (AUD) For large organisations with over 250 staff
This package includes 10 DVDs and an Organisational Multi-use License. (Additional Copies of the DVD are available at $25 (AUD) per DVD. Extra DVD’s at this discounted rate are only available as part of the large organisation package).
University/College Multi-user Package:
- $160 (AUD) - includes 2 DVDs and license. (Additional Copies of the DVD are available at $35 per DVD).

The Department for Child Protection in West Australia has chosen November 12, 13 and 14, 2012 for its second Signs of Safety Gathering. All 23 districts from around the state will present as well as three international presentations. This Gathering will provide an end-to-end picture of a comprehensive system-wide Signs of Safety implementation. Participants from overseas and elsewhere in Australia are welcome though places will be limited.
