23 June Workshop
23rd June: Safety Planning — Timeline and Trajectory
Led by Pene Turnell

Safety planning is a complex task that needs to involve professionals, parents, children and the family’s own safety network. To create strong safety plan that will last, everyone involved needs to understand and agree the goal, all the steps involved in achieving the goal and the time period of the work. This workshop will explain how professionals can create a clear agreed timeline and trajectory that will be a huge motivator for parents and will simplify and focus the safety planning work for practitioners.

7 July Workshop7th July: Safety Planning — Preparation, Monitoring and Review
Led by Andrew Turnell

Benjamin Franklin reputedly said, ‘By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail’. Whoever said it, nothing could be truer when it comes to child protection safety planning. In this workshop we’re going to look at how to prepare for safety planning sessions as well as looking at the key issues, how professionals can know whether the family and safety network are actually following the safety plan, and whether they’ll stick with it after the professionals close the case.

16 July Workshop
16th July: Analysis — Danger Statements, Safety Goals and Safety Scaling Questions
Led by Pene Turnell

Explaining to parents what the professionals are worried about and what the agency needs to see to be satisfied the children are safe are the bookends of all Signs of Safety practice. Establishing a clear safety scale ties the danger statement and safety goal together enabling professionals and families to discuss progress and establishing the foundation for the safety planning work. While the concepts are simple, getting good at this collaborative work of analysis requires care and practice. In this workshop, participants will explore the key elements of danger statements, safety goals and safety scales, discuss the challenges and practise the group supervision method of preparing them.

23 July Workshop
23rd July: Appreciative Inquiry
Led by Andrew Turnell

Every practitioner will tell you that their work gets attention most when a case has blown up or when someone is worried, they have done wrong thing. To focus on the good stuff within families, professionals need to create a culture of focusing on their successes in the workplace. This is easy to say but challenging to do since complaining is easier and the power of bad is hard wired in our DNA. This workshop focuses on how to create a culture of Appreciative Inquiry around children’s services that will create more hope, confidence, connection and intelligence in our practice.
