Licensed Signs of Safety Trainer
Michelle has worked in child welfare for the last 25 years in Minnesota at Carver County Health and Human Services beginning as a child protection worker, as the Intake and Assessment supervisor and the last 3 years as the Child & Family manager. For the last 14 years, she has practiced Signs of Safety, initially under the tutelage of Andrew Turnell in Carver County, and understands the challenges an agency faces during implementation. The practice was so impactful in Carver County that data showed a dramatic decrease of child placements, an increase in worker’s clarity on next steps, as well as the improvement of staff morale and retention that Michelle has worked at spreading the practice. She has trained in a variety of jurisdictions including Japan, Ohio, Missouri, Texas, Minnesota and Alberta. Michelle is an enthusiastic trainer that can share real examples and learning from her experience. Michelle particularly enjoys Appreciative Inquiry, engagement of children in safety planning, chronic neglect and strength’s-based supervision.

Michelle is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Work with an undergraduate degree in Sociology. In 1994, Michelle obtained her Master’s Degree in Social Work. Prior to working for Carver County, Michelle was a brief therapist for families in crisis. Michelle has been a licensed Signs of Safety trainer since 2013.
