Caara is a Licensed Signs of Safety Trainer and Consultant and holds a part time trainer/consultant position with Ktunaxa Kinbasket Child and Family Services which is a fully delegated Aboriginal Child Protection agency located in British Columbia, Canada. As a worker within an Aboriginal community one of her focus areas has been adapting the Signs of Safety tools to better suit the needs of the First Nations communities and she has worked to build and maintain long lasting relationships with leadership in the Lower Kootenay Community. The primary focus has been using the words and pictures process in a more traditional way to, not only help families tell their stories, but also break through and work through the historical, multi-generational and multi-familial occurrences of abuse, addictions, and poverty struggles that is often kept in silence and secrecy. Her style is to put it all out on the table while keeping the child’s voice in the center of the work.

Caara first started working with the Signs of Safety framework in 2007 when Andrew Turnell came to the Ktunaxa Nation. Since that time she has been utilizing the practice model at all levels of child welfare from investigations to guardianship, resources up to the supervisory, management and provincial levels. Caara primarily works with delegated Aboriginal Agencies and regions within BC and Alberta and guides them through whole system implementations. Over this past year Caara has also had the opportunity to be a part of the team working on Signs of Safety Implementation in the Republic of Ireland and this has provided her with opportunities to grow her skills and abilities to shift practice in an unfamiliar Child Protection system.

Over the past 12 years Caara has had many opportunities to learn and grow her practice. She has completed her Master’s of Social work and alongside her training and consultant work she has had the opportunity to share her work through five-day intensive Safety Planning bootcamps as well as presenting her work both provincially and internationally.
